The Resume

    (August 11, 1996- )
    Resident of Plainville, Massachusetts
Boyfriend, 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, committed suicide in his pickup truck by carbon monoxide poisoning (July 12, 2014)
Charged with involuntary manslaughter for having encouraged Roy’s suicide through text messages and phone calls
Waived her right to trial by jury
Found guilty by Judge Lawrence Moniz of the Bristol County Juvenile Court (June 16, 2017)

Why she might be annoying:

Although she and Roy considered themselves boyfriend and girlfriend, they almost never actually met, conducting their relationship almost entirely by texting.
She told Roy he would be happier once he was dead.
She advised him on how to commit suicide, suggesting he put a portable generator in the truck to produce carbon monoxide.
Her text messages in the days before he killed himself included, ‘You always say you’re gonna do it, but you never do. I just want to make sure tonight is the real thing,’ ‘You’re just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off’ and ‘The time is right and you’re ready, you just need to do it!’
Midway through the suicide, Roy got out of the truck, called Carter and said he was scared and didn’t want to leave his family. She replied, ‘Get back in.’
After his death, she pretended to have no idea what happened to him, telling people he was ‘missing.’

Why she might not be annoying:

She was named ‘most likely to brighten your day’ in high school.
Before eventually going the encouraging his suicide route, she sent Roy numerous texts urging him to get psychiatric help for his depression.
Her lawyer noted that Roy was the one to bring up the subject of suicide and had told her that she could not stop him.
A psychiatrist testified that Roy’s repeated texts threatening suicide had ‘overwhelmed’ her.
Her lawyer and psychiatrist suggested that an anti-depressant she had been prescribed could have affected her empathy and her decision making ability.
