Sports Executive
He was arguably one of the cheapest owners in the NBA.
After originally stating he would keep the Grizzlies in Vancouver, he elected to relocate the team to Memphis after one full season.
He initially had a deal with FedEx to name the team the 'Memphis Express,' a name which was automatically denied by the league.
He hired and fired head coach Lionel Hollins twice.
In an interview with a Memphis area paper, when asked about his stinginess as an owner, he angrily replied, 'What do they want me to spend, $100 million? The point is we're out-spending San Antonio and we're out-spending Phoenix. So the point is whether you're spending money means squat, Guess the playoffs mean squat, too.'
Under his ownership, his franchise became even more of a perennial laughingstock.
Unlike Bill Laurie who boldly stated his intentions to relocate the franchise, he rode it out a season before deciding to relocate.
Rather than move to an established market, he moved the team to the unserved professional market of Memphis.
He helped finance the construction of FedEx Forum with his own money.
Away from the sports scene, he is a successful businessman.
He majored in commerce at Georgetown University.
