He overthrew the democratic Sudanese government in a military coup (1989).
He honored himself with a medal on the commemoration of his takeover.
His quest to impose a strict Islamic theocracy on southern Sudan helped launch a devastating civil war.
His troops have raped, tortured, enslaved, and slaughtered untold numbers of innocents in the south as a form of 'ethnic cleansing.'
Millions of survivors were displaced in refugee camps to live under conditions of starvation and disease.
He secretly channeled money and arms to independent militias in order to continue the fighting.
He has been repeatedly accused of supporting terrorist cells and religious extremists.
He put tight restrictions on humanitarian aid that could reach his suffering people.
'Parade' magazine ranked him as the world's worst living dictator (2006).

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up in a humble village.
He has earned several military degrees.
He exiled Osama bin Laden from his country (1996).
He appears relatively cheery at public events.
