    Effectively sacked over revelations that he was paid over $140 million during his time as NYSE chairman and CEO (September 2003)
    Temporarily replaced by John Reed

Why he might be annoying:

    He is one more in a long line of grossly overpaid executives.
    He dropped out of college.
    The people who approved his huge pay raises were his colleagues.
    He may have played a role in insider trading.
    He flip-flopped by saying he would finish his term as CEO (until 2007) but resigned the same day.
    He resisted the introduction of NASDAQ-style trading because of pressure from the people who would lose their jobs as a result of the new automation.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Most people who have been in contact with him describe him as professional and business-like.
    Even though he agreed to relinquish most of his pay package, the board of directors forced him to resign.
    He helped attract foreign companies to the NYSE.
    His investments in technology helped the NYSE manage the transfer of billions of shares daily.
    He started at the bottom and worked his way to the top.
    He does charity work.
    He helped reopen the NYSE after the September 11th attacks.
