Why he might be annoying:

He had crazy hair.
He couldn't decide on a last name, using 'Johnson' for a time before settling on 'Douglass.'
When he was a child, his mistress taught him to read (a privilege not given to most slaves).
He outraged some supporters by marrying a white woman when his first wife died.
When he remarried, his longtime lover (also white) killed herself.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a slave, he fought back when he was beaten, and as a result was never whipped again.
He escaped his master by impersonating a seaman and sailing away on a ship.
He was a brilliant speaker and writer.
He wrote an autobiography while still in his twenties.
He sheltered many runaway slaves trying to escape to freedom.
His anti-slavery lectures and publications made him incredibly famous.
He outlived his daughter.
His advice was sought by several presidents, including Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
