Why he might be annoying:

    He first saw a battlefield when he was sent by the Telegraph to cover the civil war in Lebanon (1984), and described it as 'like being in a municipal garbage dump.'
    He was criticized for being too Anglocentric, such as minimizing the importance of the Russian front in WWII.
    Political scientist Richard Betts wrote that he was 'a naif about politics.'
    He described himself as '95% pacifist,' despite supporting the Vietnam War and the 2003 Iraq War.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He suffered orthopedic tuberculosis in his teens which left him with a limp for life.
    He was married to biographer Susanne Everett for 52 years.
    His 'Face of Battle' was considered groundbreaking for examining war from the perspective of the frontline soldiers.
    He was consulted by Bill Clinton about what to say at the 50th anniversary commemoration of D-Day.
    Oxford Professor Sir Michael Howard called him 'at once the most readable and the most original of living historians.'
