Monarch
    (November 6, 15-March 59)
Born at Oppidum Ubiorum (modern-day Cologne, Germany)
Granddaughter of both the emperor Augustus and his sister Octavia
    Sister of Emperor Caligula
    Mother of the Emperor Nero
Served as regent during the first year of Nero's reign
Her first marriage was to her cousin at age 13.
Her second marriage was to a wealthy landowner she allegedly poisoned.
Her third marriage was to her uncle, Emperor Claudius.
She convinced Claudius to place Nero, her son from her first marriage, ahead of his own son Britannicus in the imperial succession.
She then murdered Claudius with poisonous mushrooms.
She allegedly had an incestuous relationship with Nero.
She was popular with the army because she gave large tracts of land to veterans.
She hired the renowned philosopher Seneca to be Nero's tutor.
Nero did not show much gratitude for her efforts to put him on the throne; instead, he tried to have her assassinated four times.
When Nero finally succeeded by sending soldiers to kill her, her last words were ‘Strike here' as she pointed to the womb from which Nero was born.
