    (October 2, 1881- )
    Born in New Haven, Connecticut
    World's largest Catholic men's organization
Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney to help poor Catholics, especially with insurance
    Named after Christopher Columbus
Nicknamed 'The strong right arm of the Church'
Almost 2 million members in 13,000 local councils in over a dozen countries
Dedicated to serving the Catholic Church, supporting its priests, and helping those in need
The uniforms are little on the goofy side.
The membership consists mostly of much older men.
It's all male, not even an official women's auxiliary.
It started as an insurance company.
Some people, including some priests, dislike it for its outward resemblance to organizations like the Freemasons.
They campaigned for putting the phrase 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance and declaring Columbus Day a federal holiday.
    They get to carry swords!
Their charitable efforts are incredible, contributing an average of over 100 million dollars and over sixty million man-hours per year.
Their insurance ratings from organizations like A.M. Best and Standard & Poor are literally always the highest possible.
Their work has been repeatedly praised by popes, American presidents and other world leaders.
They are simultaneously the world's largest Catholic layperson's organization.
They do not discriminate in who they help, aiding Catholics, Protestants and non-Christians alike.
They provided over 1 million dollars to the families of the fallen heroes of 9/11 and over 10 million to Hurricane Katrina refugees.
