Why they might be annoying:

Due to unspecified reasons, they were banned from performing in the United States (1965-69).
Much like one of the bands they helped influence, Oasis, brothers Ray and Dave would break into fights while on stage.
Dave's guitar solos have been described as being 'sloppy.'
After signing with Arista records, they became a strictly hard rock band that played many big arenas/stadiums, which alienated many of their original fans.
Many of the members that left the band stated 'lack of success' as the main reason.
Howard Stern called the Kinks one of the worst bands he had ever heard and joked that the muggers who shot Davies in 2004 were robbing his girlfriend because they knew he had no money himself, due to the Kinks' 'lack of success.'

Why they might not be annoying:

Ray, Dave and Peter formed the band as teenagers.
Ray's song writing matured by leaps and bounds during their time away from the U.S.
Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of theirs.
Much of the tension between the Davies brothers was caused by the bands relentless touring schedule.
Van Halen and the Pretenders used to cover many of their songs when starting out.
Both Ray and Dave wrote autobiographies in the mid 90's. Ray wrote 'X-Ray' and Dave wrote 'Kink: An Autobiography.'
They maintained a high level of appreciation from their fans and music critics.
Their song 'Lola' is a staple on classic rock radio.
They are often mentioned in the same sentence with the Who and the Rolling Stones.
Ray was shot in the leg by two muggers in New Orleans. He was walking through the French Quarter with his girlfriend when the muggers snuck up from behind them and snatched her purse. He pursued them by foot only to eventually get shot (2004).
Before Ray's mishap, there were many rumors floating around that the band's original lineup would reunite for a tour and a new album.
They have been around for 40 years.
They ranked 42nd on VH-1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
