    (October 23, 1956- )
    Born in Detroit, Michigan
    Jazz singer
Recorded the albums 'For Every Heart' (1984), 'Jazzvisions: Echoes of Ellington' (1986), 'Never Too Far' (1990), 'Art & Survival' (1993), 'In the Moment: Live in Concert' (2000), 'The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan' (2001), 'A Little Moonlight' (2003), 'Christmas Time Is Here' (2004), 'Good Night and Good Luck (Soundtrack)' (2005) and 'When You Know' (2008)
Appeared in the film 'Good Night and Good Luck' (2005)
She auditioned to tour with Sergio Mendes by singing a Portuguese song and butchered the language so badly that 'He was laughing so hard that tears were practically coming out of his eyes.'
Although she considered Sarah Vaughan one of her great influences, she talked extensively with Vaughan backstage at a Cannonball Adderly tribute concert without recognizing her.
She stopped reading reviews for years after a critic claimed the popularity of performers like her and Bobby McFerrin was a sign of jazz in decline.
In 'Good Night and Good Luck,' she portrayed... a jazz singer. (There's an acting challenge.)
While in high school, she was discovered by Clark Terry, a trumpeter formerly in Duke Ellington's band.
Despite Mendes' laughter, she got the gig and learned thirteen Portuguese songs in just two weeks. ('You do that sort of crazy stuff when you're young.')
She performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
She incorporates elements of pop, Latin, classical and world music into her performances. ('I'm kind of a chameleon.... I love all kinds of different things.')
A critic described her as combining 'the dexterity of Sarah Vaughan, the disciplined integrity of Carmen McRae and the effusive warmth of Ella Fitzgerald.'
