    He suffered stage fright.
    He had his daughter cast as a female barrister in 'Rumpole.'
    He frequently tried to quit 'Rumpole,' declaring that TV fame was 'an insatiable monster.'
    Despite that attitude, he portrayed a very Rumpole-esque character in a series of ads for Lloyds Bank.

    He was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts (1983).
