Why he might be annoying:

    His film output was limited to government-sponsored projects.
    His documentary films were generally aimed at selling the New Deal to the American public, angering some lawmakers.
    He was named president of the U.S. Film Service by President Roosevelt, but only served for two years. (It was abolished by a hostile Congress amid accusations that it was a propaganda tool for the Roosevelt administration.)
    He struggled to fund his film projects in his later years.

    He spoke out against censorship in the film industry.
    As a young writer, he wrote movie reviews for McCall's, Town and Country, and Vanity Fair.
    William Randolph Hearst fired him three times, once after he wrote a column praising New Deal Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace.
    He was known as 'FDR's Filmmaker.'
    His first film, 'The Plow That Broke the Plains,' about agricultural and social problems related to the Dust Bowl, received critical acclaim.
    His next film, 'The River,' about the Tennessee Valley Authority, won the Best Documentary at the Venice International Film Festival.
    He made films for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
    After the war, he produced for the War Department a documentary account of Nazi activities recounted in the Nuremberg trials, which included raw footage of the Holocaust.
    He is the namesake for The Pare Lorentz Center, located at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York.
