    He is a lifelong fan of Robert A. Heinlein, who was 'overjoyed' to be asked to write 'Variable Star,' based on a seven-page outline left by Heinlein.
    He usually expresses a positive outlook in his books, commenting 'I've been clinically depressed myself. But I left it out of my work for God's sake.... Trying to spread clinical depression is about the most absurd undertaking I can imagine.'
