Why he might be annoying
He made headlines by refusing to join the Congressional Black Caucus.
He labeled an anonymous group of black Democrats and civil rights activists as ‘race-hustling poverty pimps.’
Although he pledged to only serve three terms in Congress, he served four.
Despite campaigning for ‘moral values,’ he fathered two children out of wedlock.
He said: ‘I think Democrats are much more comfortable using race as a political tool.’
Why he might not be annoying
He picked cotton with his siblings as a child to help his family earn extra money.
As quarterback, he helped the University of Oklahoma win two consecutive Orange Bowl championships.
He graduated the University of Oklahoma with a degree in journalism.
He was voted MVP of the Grey Cup during his rookie CFL season.
He was a spokesman for the YMCA and Big Brothers-Big Sisters.
His father reportedly said: 'A black person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.'
