    Born in Boston, Massachusetts
    Painter and illustrator known for his seascapes
    Works include 'Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)' (1876), 'An Afternoon Sun' (1877), 'Schooner at Sunset' (1880), 'Undertow' (1886), 'Eight Bells' (1886), 'Rowing Home' (1890), 'The Gulf Stream' (1899) and 'After the Hurricane, Bahamas' (1899)
    He was financially dependent on his brother much of his life.
    His early watercolors prompted a critic to declare, 'A child with an ink bottle could not have done worse.'
    He described himself as a 'hermit with a brush.'
    He was reticent about his personal life and the meaning of his paintings, with one friend saying that his four favorite words were 'Mind your own business.'
    His paintings won gold medals at the Chicago World's Fair (1894) and Paris Exhibition (1900).
    His advice to fellow artists was, 'Look at nature, work independently and solve your own problems.'
    Bill Gates paid $30 million for Homer's 'Lost on the Grand Banks,' a record for an American painting (1998).
