    (August 18, 1906-October 31, 1996)
    Born in Paris, France
Film critic for Cinemagazine and Cinemonde
Directed the films ‘Jenny’ (1936), ‘Le Quai des brumes’ (‘Port of Shadows,’ 1938), ‘Hotel du Nord’ (1938), ‘Le jour se leve’ (‘Daybreak,’ 1939), ‘Les Visiteurs du soir’ (‘The Devil’s Envoys,’ 1942) ‘Les enfants du paradis’ (‘Children of Paradise,’ 1945), ‘Les portes des la nuit’ (‘Gates of the Night,’ 1946), ‘L’air de Paris’ (‘The Air of Paris,’ 1954), ‘Les tricheurs’ (‘Young Sinners,’ 1958), ‘Trois chambers a Manhattan’ (‘Three Rooms in Manhattan,’ 1965) and ‘Les Assassins de l’ordre’ (‘Law Breakers,’ 1971)
Most of his films after ‘Children of Paradise’ were critical and commercial failures.
French ‘New Wave’ critics and filmmakers suggested that the success of his 30s and 40s films owed more to their screenplays, written by surrealist poet Jacques Prevert, than to Carné’s direction.
In his memoirs, he mentioned nearly 40 post-war film projects that he initiated but was unable to finish.
Prevert said, ‘He is a great director, and an extraordinarily modest man.’
During World War II, he risked being arrested and sent to a concentration camp by continuing to work with his long-time set designer and composer, who were both Jewish.
Several of the extras in ‘Children of Paradise’ were French Resistance agents who he let work on the film for their daytime cover.
In a poll of 600 critics and academics, ‘Children of Paradise’ was voted the greatest French film of all time (1995).
Francois Truffaut said, ‘I have made 23 films. I would swap them all for the chance to have made ‘Children of Paradise.’’
