Why he might be annoying:

He was so enamored of all things Scottish that he falsely claimed to have been born on the Isle of Skye.
He dropped out of both University College, London, and the University of Bonn after a year.
He ran unsuccessfully for Parliament (1950).
In some films, he was credited as Seamus Mor na Feusag -- Gaelic for 'Big James with the beard.'
He was never able to memorize his lines and had to read his dialogue off cue cards.
He was typecast as loud and domineering authority figures.
He was a relentless womanizer who was named as 'the other man' in multiple divorce suits.
He went bankrupt due to lavish spending, such as throwing a party where guests were served bowls of caviar.

Why he might not be annoying:

He spoke French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Greek, Dutch, Danish and Gaelic in addition to English.
He served as secretary of the British Ice Hockey Association and spent as season as goaltender for the London Lions (1931-32).
He also spent a couple of years racing cars (1932-34).
He served in the Royal Navy Reserves in World War II until he was injured by shrapnel.
His son drowned at age four (1949).
He was described as a 'brilliant raconteur.'
He was a long-time friend of Prince Philip and taught falconry to Prince Charles.
When a crew member laughed upon seeing him nude as he changed on set, he yelled, 'What you Cockney bastards do not appreciate is the co-efficient of expansion.'
