At thirteen he tried to run away from home to join the circus band (1867). His father then enlisted him in the Marines (1867).
Although only known for his marches, he composed waltzes, operettas and classical music.
The sousaphone was invented by Ignaz Stowasser, not him (1849). He modified it and renamed it after himself.
The marines told him to renamed his civilian band 'Sousa's New Marine Band.'

He conducted Gilbert & Sullivan's play 'H.M.S. Pinafore' on Broadway (1875).
He lead the United States Marine Band under five United States presidents (1880-92).
He received the rank of Navy Lieutenant during World War I.

He was a charter member of 'ASCAP' (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers).
His 'Liberty Bell March' is the theme for ' Monty Python's Flying Circus.'
