Why he might be annoying:

He was a Communist.
He was imprisoned for robbing a bank (1967-74).
He lost presidential elections in 1990, 1996 and 2001 largely over corruption allegations that estates seized by the Sandinista government became the private property of officials including Ortega.
He is buds with Western Hemisphere bad boys Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.
His stepdaughter accused him of sexually abusing her for nine years, beginning when she was 11.

Why he might not be annoying:

His mother was imprisoned by the Somoza government for possessing love letters that the police insisted were coded political messages.
Although the Reagan administration dismissed his election to the presidency as a Soviet-style sham, international observers reported that the elections were free and fair.
After losing his re-election bid, he left office peacefully, declaring, 'We leave victorious because we Sandinistas have spilled blood and sweat not to cling to government posts but to bring Latin America a little dignity, a little social justice.'
He dropped most of his Marxist rhetoric over the years.
