Why he might be annoying:

He sided with the liberal minority opinion of the Supreme Court and earned the nickname 'The Great Dissenter.'
He believed that the law was the law whether you agreed with it or not.

Why he might not be annoying:

Fought for the North (Massachusetts Brigade) during the Civil War.
His opinions, usually in the minority, were always brilliantly reasoned.
He was a strong champion of Freedom of Speech.
He said 'Pretty much all the honest truth telling in the world is done by children.'
In his doctrine of judicial restraint, he warned judges to not allow their opinions to affect their decisions.
He married a girl he met when they were just ten, and their marriage lasted 57 years until her death.
His belief was that it was up to us to change the laws that were unreasonable.
