    He was a heavy drinker, often to the point where he had to be carried home.

    He would beat his sons with a belt.
    Although he was swift to punish his sons for infractions at home, he ignored when they bullied other kids in the village.
    He was discharged from the army after suffering shrapnel wounds and recurring bouts of malaria (1943).
    An investigation by the Simon Wiesenthal Center found no evidence linking him to war crimes or abuses against civilians.
    He played trumpet and flugelhorn in a police band.
    He was an amateur curling champ and instilled a love of sports in his sons.
