Philosopher

The Resume

    (February 8, 1878-June 13, 1965)
    Born in Vienna, Austria
Edited the Zionist paper 'Die Welt'
Lecturer at Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1938-51)
    Existentialist philosopher
Established 'philosophy of dialogue' about the relation between man and God
Works include 'I and Thou' (1923) and 'The Problem of Man' (1948)

Why he might be annoying:

His often idiosyncratic use of the German language produced debates over how to best translate his works.
His view of the Bible as a dialogue between Israel and God was considered heretical by many Orthodox rabbis.
Despite his calls for improved Arab-Israeli relations, he lived in a house that had belonged to an Arab Christian family that fled Jerusalem just before the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Paula Winkler for 57 years until her death.
He emphasized the every day aspects of religion instead of theological dogma.
Reinhold Niebuhr called him 'the greatest living Jewish philosopher.'
He said, 'The love of God is unreal unless it is crowned with love for one's fellow man.'
