    Wrote 'The House of Mirth' (1905), 'Ethan Fromme' (1911), 'The Reef' (1912) and 'The Age of Innocence' (1920)

Why she might be annoying:

    She came from a family so rich that they allegedly inspired the phrase 'keeping up with the Joneses.'
    She called her marriage 'the biggest mistake of my life.'
    She suffered a nervous breakdown after her divorce (1913).
    She then moved to France and returned to the US only once, to accept an honorary degree from Yale (1923).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She used some of her royalties to secretly support Henry James when he ran into financial difficulties.
    She was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for her charitable work for refugees during World War I.
    She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction (1921).
