The Resume

    (June 15, 1911-March 21, 1997)
Born in Ampfield, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Wilbert Vere Awdry
Anglican clergyman, railway enthusiast, and children's author
Wrote the 26 book 'Railway Series' featuring Thomas the Tank Engine (1945-92)
Named an officer of the order of the British Empire (1996)

Why he might be annoying:

The Railway Series stories were very formulaic: the engine at the center of the story would get into trouble, usually through a character fault like selfishness or arrogance; the problem would be solved with a lesson being learned in the process; and the engine would be forgiven by the Fat Controller.
He wrote himself into the Railway Series as a character called 'the thin clergyman.'
He disliked the nickname bestowed upon him by the press, 'the Puff Puff Parson,' as he felt it denigrated both his writing and his career as a priest.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Margaret Waite for 51 years.
He was a member of several railway preservation societies.
He created the Railway Series characters in stories that he told his son Cristopher to entertain him during a bout of measles.
