    He never learned to read music.
    He appeared shirtless on his album covers when he was in his 50s.
    He's cited as one of the first to incorporate bongos and congas into jazz.
    He was one of the most in demand session players in music, working with legends like Tony Bennett, Lena Horne and Dinah Washington.
    He's noted for his creating a connection with his audience.
    He continued to play percussion with 'passion' and 'precision' well into his 80s.
