    Her husband's brother John Jacob Astor VI contested Vincent's will when he died.
    John Jacob lost his case against the estate in court.
    She was largely self-educated.
    She was a nurse during World War II.
    She wrote four books.
    She and Vincent developed the Vincent Astor Foundation to benefit New York City.
    She has awarded an average of 100 grants a year to civic projects, social projects, and cultural institutions in New York City.
    She was a major benefactor of the New York Public Library.
    She awarded a total of almost $200 million in grants.
    She won the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
