    Works included 'Oak and Ivy' and 'Ode To Ethiopia'
    Wrote lyrics for the Broadway musical 'In Dahomey' (1903)
    He suffered depression.
    He was a drunk.
    He beat his wife, fellow poet Alice Ruth Moore, so badly she needed hospitalization.
    The couple separated but he passed away before the divorce was finalized.
    He wrote his first poem at 6.
    His high school buddies, the Wright Brothers, published his initial works.
    Alice cheated on him with other women.
    His poetry drew acclaim for using a conversational tone, and employing both standard and non-standard English.
    In 2002, he was declared one of the '100 Greatest African-Americans.'
