    Umpired US Open (2004)
During a US Open Match between Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati, she made a lousy call that cost Serena a point and gave it to Jennifer (September 8, 2004).
The lines person originally called the ball good and she over ruled it out.
The call was made in the first game of the deciding set of the match and affected Serena William's play from then on.
Capriati went on to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
TV commentators were astonished and the replay clearly showed the ball in.
Serena Williams, who is known for her good sportsmanship and graciousness, rarely ever questions an umpire.
When Serena angrily asked for a clarification, Mariana told her to 'please calm down.'
US Open officials publicly acknowledge Alves made a mistake and apologized.
Serena Williams said: 'I'm very angry and bitter right now. I felt cheated' and 'I guess she went temporarily insane.'
During the final set, she wrongly called three other close calls against Serena.
Serena said: 'I'd prefer she not umpire at my court anymore. She's obviously anti-Serena.'
Although Capriati played a great match, her victory is unfortunately tainted because of Alves' poor officiating.
Ironically, a week before this incident, Capriati suggested tennis use instant replay.
Capriati said: 'Believe me, I've had things go against me many times, plenty of times. I deserve to get a call once in a while. One point, I don't think, changed the match.'
She was removed from the 2004 US open although officials ducked the question whether she was fired or not.
She brought controversy and interest to the US Open.
Her wrong call has brought renewed interest in using replays to decide questionable calls.
Up until this bad call, she was a no name.
