    Appeared on Broadway in 'Anne of England' (1941), 'Macbeth' (1948) and 'Black Chiffon' (1950)
    Named a Dame Commander of the British Empire (1960)
    She left acting for several years in the 1920s to work as a welfare officer.
    She was nowhere near as successful on screen as she was on the British stage.
    One critic gave her the backhanded compliment, 'Had Flora Robson been beautiful, she would have been a major star.'
    Dame Sybil Thorndike said of her performance opposite Paul Robeson in the play 'All God's Chillun,' 'When I saw Flora, I thought to myself, here we have the making of one of England's greatest tragic actresses.'
    She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 'Saratoga Trunk.'
    She was named Dame Commander for her work with charities.
