    He failed to replicate the success he had in the 1865 British Open before he died.

    He made money as an apprentice to a clubmaker.
    He performed his iron shots with a backspin.
    He and Allan Robertson beat Old Tom Morris and Willie Park Sr. in a challenge match (May 1857).
    Between 1860 and 1870, he was the only golfer to interupt Willie Park Sr., Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris's domination of the British Open's Challenge Belt.
    He was one of the golfers who played in the very first British Open.
