U.S. Governor
    (August 18, 1919-May 7, 2010)
    Born in Ellinwood, Kansas
    Two-time governor of Alaska (1966-69,1990-94)
US Secretary of the Interior (1969-70)
    Wrote 'Who Owns America?' (1971)
He initially planned to settle in Australia and headed for Alaska only because of delays in getting a passport.
He tried to decline the post of Secretary of Interior; he said that he cried when Nixon declared that his decision was final.
He declared himself opposed to 'conservation for the sake of conservation,' drawing opposition to his nomination from environmentalists.
For his second term as governor, he was the candidate of the Alaskan Independence Party even though he opposed Alaskan independence.
He was married to Ermalee Strutz for 65 years until his death.
He reportedly arrived in Anchorage with 37 cents in pocket and built a construction and real estate empire.
He became a strong environmentalist as Interior Secretary, issuing stricter regulations on offshore drilling, filing suit against companies accused of discharging mercury and halting construction of a jetport in the Everglades.
He was fired by Nixon for his outspoken independence, most notably writing a letter following the Kent State shooting criticizing the administration's handling of the Vietnam War.
