    Born in Tinchebray, France
    Essayist and poet
    Considered a founder of the surrealist movement in art and literature
    Wrote 'The Surrealist Manifesto' (1924) and 'The Second Manifesto of Surrealism' (1930)
    Also wrote 'Magnetic Fields' (1920), 'Nadja' (1928), 'Immaculate Conception' (1930), 'Communicating Vessels' (1932), 'Mad Love' (1937), 'Poems' (1948) and 'Selected Poems' (1969)

Why he might be annoying:

    He joined the French Communist Party (1927) and even after leaving it continued to consider himself a Marxist.
    He was married three times, divorced twice.
    He was a writer who led a movement known mainly for its contributions to the visual arts.
    He encouraged rebellion against established artistic and social norms, but would expel from the movement anyone who disagreed with him.
    For example, he denounced Salvador Dali as an 'impostor' after Dali supported Francisco Franco.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His ideas were influenced by Sigmund Freud and his work in a neurological ward during World War I.
    He was expelled from the Communist Party for complaining about its rigid, doctrinaire thinking (1933).
    He joined the medical corps of the French Army during World War II.
    After the Vichy government banned his works, he escaped to the US.
    He opposed the French colonial wars in Algeria and Indochina.
