Why he might be annoying
He cried when he signed the documents deposing Sihanouk.
He cried when Alexander Haig told him that the US would not deploy troops to support his regime.
His rule became increasingly erratic and authoritarian after he suffered a stroke (February, 1971).
He suspended the National Assembly, saying he would 'no longer play the game of democracy.' (October, 1971)
His government was known for its corruption.
He increasingly depended on the advice of astrologers and Buddhist mystics.
During a Khmer Rouge assault on Phnom Penh, he sprinkled a circle of consecrated sand around the city to protect it.
When he went into exile, he took a million dollars from the Cambodian National Bank with him.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a staunch anti-Communist.
He rejected a plan by his Deputy Prime Minister, Sirik Matak, to assassinate Sihanouk as 'criminal insanity.'
During the coup, his brother, Lon Nil, was killed by a pro-Sihanouk mob, which then cooked and ate his liver.
Before going into exile, he accurately predicted, 'If the other side took over, they would kill all the educated people -- the teachers, the artists, the intellectuals -- and that would be a step towards barbarism.'
