    He was the first international star of rugby union.
    In a 2015 poll, his performance at the 1995 semifinals, where he scored four tries by running through and over the English defenders, was named the greatest feat in World Cup history.
    He was described as inspiring 'equal amounts of admiration and fear' in opponents.
    He had a successful sports career despite suffering nephrotic syndrome, a serious kidney disorder.
    He received a kidney transplant (2004), but his body later rejected it (2011).
    He was a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF New Zealand.
