The Resume

    (1485-December 2, 1547)
Started an expedition with 11 ships, 500 soldiers, 13 horses, and some cannons to Mexico.
Discovered and conquered the Aztec Empire.
Claimed Tenochtitlan for Spain (August 13, 1521).
Given the title of Captain General and Governor of New Spain; the capital, Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)

Why he might be annoying:

He only searched for gold and plunder during his exploration missions, and took Indian hospitality as a sign of weakness.
After stumbling upon the capital of the Aztec Empire, one of the most beautiful cities in the ancient world (Tenochtitlan), he proceeded to rape it of it's gold.
During his run as 'Captain General' of New Spain, he destroyed nearly all Aztec historical documents in his pursuit to Christianize the new Spanish colony, which has left historians in the dark about how old and rich of a history the Aztec Empire had.
Most of his men during his initial plundering of Tenochtitlan drowned, carrying large sacks of gold and plunder across the causeway to the mainland (Hows that for greed?).
He's credited for the amazing feat conquering the most populated empire on Earth at the time, with his 500 men being outnumbered several times over by the nearly 5 million Aztec citizens (even though disease wiped out 9/10ths of them).
His last name has several variations. (Cortez, Cortes, Cortés, Cortéz, Cor'tes).

Why he might not be annoying:

He brought horses for the first time to Central America.
Many Indians joined his cause to overthrow Montezuma, despotic leader and God of the Aztecs.
The atrocities committed by the conquistadors were nothing compared to the atrocities committed by Montezuma.
Christopher Columbus' tactics were really not much different from Hernando Cortés', yet Columbus is honored for it.
He shared the wealth he gained with his entire crew.
