It was established by the Government of Saskatchewan after mines were developed in the region.
Its population significantly declined in the years following the provincial economic collapse in the 1980’s.
As a result, the community lost its town status and was reduced to Northern settlement status as a result.
It was approaching ghost town status 40 years after the community’s town status was reduced to a settlement.

Why Uranium City, Saskatchewan might not be annoying:

It was modelled after the mining community of Arvida, Quebec.
It was built as a way to provide permanent housing for the mining workers in the region, who were originally forced to live in a campground.
It had a population of 2,507 in 1981, prior to the mining collapse.
It is the birthplace of former Canadian women’s national ice hockey team star Gina Kingsbury.
