When he was four years old his father died.
He considered some of his early work, that of an inexperienced teen and withdrew it.
He suffers from depression.
Some of his work was considered by prudes to be 'gloomy or peculiar.'

His later writings show influence of Transcendentalist, which was backed by New England intellectual circles and literary establishment.
