Why he might be annoying:

In school, he was more focused on athletics than academics.
There's an ongoing debate as to whether it was he or Martin Cooper should get credit for 'inventing the cell phone.'
He rarely gives interviews (and its unclear whether that's because he's not sought out for them or if he's just extremely private).

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up poor with eight brothers and two sisters.
He was trained as an electrical engineer at Tennessee State University and Stanford.
He was the first African-American to be hired directly out of an HBCU (by A&T Bell Laboratories).
He modernized cell phones by converting car phones into mobile phones people could hold in their hands.
He pioneered signal processing, which converted analog from signals into digital data.
He came up with the idea to digitize speech in order to reduce bandwidth (which allowed four times the number of people on the same spectrum).
He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1995.
He owns patents related to digital cellular technologies, dual-mode digital cellular phones, and digital software radio.
When asked about his success, he answered: 'I challenged. I had so much self confidence I was able to challenge the status quo.'
