    (October 16, 1758-May 28, 1843)
Called 'Father of American Scholarship and Education'
    Graduated from Yale (1778)
    Earned law degree (1781)
Wrote and published 'An American Dictionary of the English Language' (1828)
Also wrote 'A Grammatical Institute of the English Language' (1783-85) and 'American Spelling Book,' aka 'Blue-backed Speller' (1786)
Founded New York's first daily newspaper, 'American Minerva' (December 9, 1793)
    Helped found Amherst College (1821)
Some mistake Daniel Webster for him as the 'dictionary guy.'
His 'Blue-backed Speller' helped to create spelling bees.
It took him over 27 years to create and publish his dictionary.
As a devout Christian he believed 'education useless without the Bible' and published his own translation of the King James Version of the Bible (1833).
He had to quit school temporarily to serve in the American Revolution.
His 'Blue-backed Speller' made him wealthy, taught five generations of kids in the U.S. how to spell and read, and was THE learning text of its day - used by Ben Franklin to teach his granddaughter.
His dictionary contained 70,000 words, 12,000 that had not been in previous dictionaries.
In the TV series 'M*A*S*H,' Hawkeye said his favorite book was Webster's Dictionary because he felt once he read it he could claim to have read every book ever written.
