    (August 12, 1867-May 31, 1963)
    Born in Dresden, Germany
    American author and teacher
American citizen, born in Germany and raised in Indiana
Considered the greatest woman classicist of all time
Wrote: 'The Greek Way,' 'The Roman Way' and 'Mythology'
Graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a BA and an MA
She didn't publish her first book until she was sixty-two years old.
She gave short shrift to Norse mythology in 'Mythology' and ignored non-western mythology in her writings.
She didn't actually go to Greece until she was ninety.
She didn't just want people to study the classics; she wanted people to live like people did in them.
She disliked Ovid because he didn't think the myths were real!
She didn't care much for the Romans and her book 'The Roman Way' was mostly about how the Romans didn't measure up to the Greeks.
'The Greek Way' was published in 1930 but didn't become a hit until it was featured in a book-of-the-month club in 1957.
She learned Latin, Greek, German, French, and German starting at age seven.
King Paul of Greece made her an honorary citizen of Athens.
'Mythology' by Hamilton is one of the best selling books of all time and is and will probably remain the standard introductory text for mythology for all time.
She had an incredible love and zest for learning and teaching the classics.
She had to overcome a lot of prejudice to do what she did.
When she attended classes as an adult in Munich and Leipzig, she was forced to remain hidden in a closet built in the lecture hall just for her.
She taught at Bryn Mawr Prep for 26 years.
