Why he might be annoying:

He lied at the Academy Awards claiming he was an Advertising Executive when he was actually a teacher and was fired.
He used PCP - Angel Dust.
He spent four months in jail for appearing nude at an L.A. council meeting, debating nude beaches (1974).
He owed drug dealers so much money, that he was setup during a robbery and shot dead (the robbers only took $5, a camera and backpack - July 8, 1979).
The killers were convicted of murder (December, 1982).

Why he might not be annoying:

He moved to San Francisco after receiving over 100 minor offense tickets in L.A. and rightfully felt the L.A. police were harassing him.
He opened Fay Wey, the first openly gay art gallery in San Francisco (1978).
He displayed Robert Maplethorpe pictures, a decade before he became nationally known.
He protested Dan White's sentencing of 3-5 years for killing Harvey Milk and George Masconi, by staging a mock assassination of Dan White.
