    He was a close ally of Blair in the 1990's, and was hired by Blair to perform major administrative duties.
    He accused Oxford University of not accepting a student because of her background rather than her academic potential.
    A Labour Party official called him a 'control freak' with psychological issues.
    Lord Turnbull said he ran the Treasury Department with 'Stalinesque ruthlessness.'
    After speaking to one of his supporters about immigration policy, he was caught (on microphone) calling the woman a 'bigoted person' (2010).
    He attended the University of Edinburgh at the age of 16, and received his doctorate several years later.
    While at school, he suffered retinal injuries while playing rugby that almost forced him to go blind.
    He began getting involved in politics at the age of 12.
    He and his brother John started their own newspaper at the age of 10, with proceeds going to aid African refugees.
    His only daughter died after a premature birth in 2002.
