U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (July 27, 1964- )
    Born in Detroit, Michigan
Birth name is David Alan Brat
    Republican
    Represents Virginia's 7th congressional district
Former economics professor at Randolph–Macon College
Defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the district's Republican primary, becoming the first primary challenger to oust a sitting House Majority Leader since the position's creation in 1899 (Jun. 10, 2014)
Endorsed by prominent conservatives Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, Amy Kremer, and Mark Levin
Author of 'American Underdog: Proof That Principles Matter' (2016)

Why he might be annoying:

    He's a Pickle Ball enthusiast.
He lost his only other electoral race in the Primary (2011).
His academic submissions tended to focus on Ayn Rand and the intersection of religion with economics.
During an appearance on C-SPAN's 'Washington Journal' program, a call-in viewer was quickly cut off after following a question about his year-end spending bill with 'can I shit in your mouth?'
His last name resulted in countless 'Cantor kicked out of office by a Brat' media headlines.
Weirdly enough he looked like Cantor's physical 'Bizarro world' doppelanger.
By his own admittance, his platform wasn't all that different from the ousted incumbent, save for Brat's ardent opposition to immigration reform and amnesty which Cantor had ardently supported.
He became an overnight Tea Party folk hero despite neither identifying with the movement before or after his win.
Eric Cantor was practically booed off the stage at one of his own rallies after critiquing Brat by saying 'It is easy to sit in the rarified environs of academia, in the Ivory towers of a college campus, with no real accountability and no consequence when you throw stones at those of us who are working everyday to make a difference' in a video gone viral (May 10, 2016).
His speech ran over the time limit for the #StoptheIranDeal Rally, and he was forced to hurriedly wrap it up without making much of a point.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is an engaging speaker who, unlike the aloof Cantor, is gifted at working a crowd.
He has expressed his support for Congressional term limits.
He met his wife while she was dog-sitting for someone in the H.W. Bush administration.
He coached the Randolph-Macon College Debate team to win the 11th Annual intercollegiate Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation Ethics Bowl.
He was out-spent by his Primary opponent by a 26 to 1 margin (he beat Cantor by over 50%).
He went on record criticizing the conservative Right for supporting limited government but also embracing governmental restriction for social issues like abortion and homosexuality.
He said in an interview with Glenn Beck that he liked Cantor 'as a human being; I’m commanded by God to do that and I do that. He’s been strong on national defense, and where he’s good he’s good.'
His victory in the Virginia Primary was a political shot heard around the world, setting into motion a domino-effect for Washington's political establishment.
His ousting of Cantor threw a wrench into Rep. John Boehner's original plan to vacate the House Speaker seat and install Eric Cantor in his place, forcing him to stay on until his abrupt resignation the next year.
He told Sean Hannity following his win: 'I was blessed. I mean, it's a miracle. What do I attribute it to? First of all, I attribute it to God. And I'm utterly humbled and thankful. I'm a believer and so I'm humbled that God gave us this win.'
