The Resume

    (October 12, 1938-December 2, 2018)
    Born in Wellington, New Zealand
Directed ‘Wild Man’ (1977), ‘Goodbye Pork Pie’ (1981), ‘Utu’ (1983), ‘The Quiet Earth’ (1985), ‘Young Guns II’ (1990), ‘Freejack’ (1992), ‘The Last Outlaw’ (1994), ‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory’ (1995) and ‘Spooked’ (2004)
Second unit director on ‘Dante’s Peak’ (1997), the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy (2001-03) and ‘XXX: State of the Union’ (2005)

Why he might be annoying:

He went to Hollywood to earn enough money to pay off a large back tax bill.
He lost the chance to direct ‘Predator’ by cracking a ‘Conan the Librarian’ joke to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
His most commercially successful film, the Steven Seagal sequel ‘Under Siege 2,’ wasn’t exactly high art.
He said, ‘It would be nice if my opinion were taken a seriously as Peter Jackson’s, for argument sake, particularly since he is so inferior as a filmmaker.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He noted about his early, no-budget filmmaking days, ‘We'd learnt the craft, literally, on the side of the road. Trying it out, shooting it, trying this and that.’
’Goodbye Pork Pie’ was considered the ‘coming of age’ for New Zealand cinema, since it showed Kiwis could make commercially successful films about their homeland.
He was one of twenty New Zealanders honored by the Arts Foundation as an Art Icon (2013)
He was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to film (2014).
