    He received no athletic scholarship offers out of high school.
    He entered the NBA undrafted.
    The San Jose Mercury News said that Lin 'had something of a cult following after his signing,' similar to that of baseball player Stephen Strasburg.
    Some fans and commentators observed that his signing with the Warriors was derided as a 'publicity stunt.'
    Many media outlets began creating nicknames derived from his surname such as 'Linsanity.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He set numerous school and Ivy League records for a college basketball player.
    He became the NBA's first Harvard graduate in 57 years.
    He scored 89 points in his first three career starts, the most by any player since the merger between the ABA and the NBA in 1976.
    Despite being heckled constantly by teammates, he is proud of his Chinese heritage.
    He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
    The Associated Press called him, 'The most surprising story in the NBA.'
