Lived in Maceo, Kentucky
Afflicted with rare fungus that ate away his eyes, nose and cheekbones
Underwent facial surgery and was fitted with a removable, realistic prosthetic face

Why he might be annoying:

He appeared on Ripley's Believe It or Not, Maury Povich, and Larry King Live to get attention for himself.
He entered, and won, a local radio station's contest called 'Scar Wars' judging the most severe disfigurement (not very dignified!).

Why he might not be annoying:

He underwent tremendous pain, suffering, and the loss of his sight and facial features.
He was given the choice of being able to die peacefully at home or going ahead with an extremely risky corrective surgery, and he chose (and survived) the surgery.
He was the only known recipient of a prosthetic face.
He suffered several strokes and 'died' three times, but was revived.
He lived a relatively good life at home with his wife and children.
When he finally woke up from the surgery, he wrote two words on a blackboard: 'Hell Yes!'
He was a motivational speaker and appears at events and prayer meetings.
He said: 'I have never, ever been scared. I have always been high-spirited, and I'm going to be that way till the day I die. . . . and evidently they're having a hard time killing me because they tried to do it three times.'
