    He was the youngest of five children.
    Kent State went 3-8 in his first year as an NCAA head coach.
    He lost in his only Tangerine Bowl appearance as Kent State's head coach (1972).
    According to the Pac-12 conference, two of his wins in his time at the University of Washington were forfeited for using an ineligible player.
    His last Huskies quarterback, Billy Joe Hobert, received $50,000 in loans from a family friend, producing a controversial scandal around the football program.
    He quit his job as the Huskies' football head coach before the 1993 season after his legacy was marred by the scandal concerning improper benefits received by several players.
    He posted five Miami Hurricane passing records as a quarterback.
    He was married to his wife for 61 years until his death.

    He coached in Kent State's first bowl game appearance.
    He coached the University of Washington Huskies to four Rose Bowl victories (1977, 1981, 1990 and 1991) and an undefeated 1991 season with a national championship title victory.
