    It was where the state's first mental institution was going be occupied, but it was settled to be built in Yankton.
    It is where jeweler James Yeado and his wife were killed and raped by Thomas James White Hawk and William Stands (March 24, 1967).
    It is largely overshadowed by Sioux Falls.

    Lewis and Clark camped in its nearby location by the Vermillion River (1804).
