    Born in Cairo, Egypt
    Birth name was Cecil Louis Troughton Smith
    Best known for his eleven-book 'Horatio Hornblower' series
    Also wrote 'Payment Deferred' (1926), 'The African Queen' (1935) and 'Hunting the Bismarck' (1959)

Why he might be annoying:

    He tried to join the army but failed the physical.
    He went to medical school, but admitted that he 'lazed away' his time rather than go to classes.
    His parents supported him financially until he was 27.
    A trip to Hollywood to write a pirate movie was cut short due to a threatened paternity suit from an opera singer (1935).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His Hornblower novels were noted for their accuracy in historical and nautical details.
    Gene Roddenberry was influenced by Hornblower in creating the characters of James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard.
    He discovered Roald Dahl and got his first books published.
    Ernest Hemingway said, 'I recommend Forester to everyone literate I know.'
