Why he might be annoying:

He affected the persona of a 'plain New Hampshire farmer,' but he was really from California.
He dropped out of kindergarten, first grade, second grade, Dartmouth College, and Harvard University.
He couldn't hold down a job.
He was a dreamer who sometimes neglected his family.
He proposed to another woman very shortly after his wife died.
Some critics sneer at his poetry for its old-fashioned style, simple language, and rustic imagery.

Why he might not be annoying:

He outlived his wife and four of his children.
One son committed suicide.
His sister and another daughter went insane.
He suffered from bad hemorrhoids.
He had a dry sense of humor.
He recited a poem at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.
After he died, a jealous former student wrote a vicious 2,000-page biography (now largely discredited) that depicted him as a monster.
